AIP Apple Crisp
I developed this recipe when I was on the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) and it has stayed in my family’s recipe rotation because we love the flavors of the roasted cinnamon apples combined with the crunchy topping. It’s a bowl of comfort made with clean ingredients. This apple crisp tastes delicious on its own or topped with your favorite paleo or AIP whipped cream (coconut cream, maple syrup, and vanilla extract). Because the ingredients are so clean, you can enjoy this apple crisp as a healthy dessert or even breakfast.
Ingredient Notes
- Granny Smith Apples – While you can use any apples for this recipe, I love the sweet and tart flavor combo of granny smith apples. Perfect for apples pies or crisps like this recipe!
- Lemon Juice – Fresh is always best!
- Arrowroot Flour – You can substitute with tapioca starch.
- Maple Syrup – Honey is a great substitute!
- Cinnamon and Nutmeg – There’s no substitution as this spices give this dish the classic apple crisp flavors.
- Coconut Flour and Tigernut Flour – I have not tried any substitutions for these ingredients, but please let me know if you do!
- Coconut Sugar – I used coconut sugar instead of honey or maple syrup to get the right texture and consistency to help the topping crisp up.
- Coconut Oil – I love the flavor of the coconut oil, but you can also avocado or ghee or butter if tolerated.
Storage
Stores well in a covered or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
